Abstract

We can verify that in São Luís, in the end of the century XIX, madness was more one category of exclusion. Individuals called madmen were seen for the society like a problem of morality and maintenance of the public order. Although to exist, the medical discourse was fragile and inefficient, submissive a lot of occasions to the police ambit.
