A PENA E A ESPADA. Retórica e história nas cartas de um governador do século XVIII

Abstract

Between the sixteenth and the eighteenth centuries, the letter was a specific documental genre. Thus, the rules for its writing were well organized in treaties, dialogues and discourses, and were shared by diverse scholars. This article introduces a series of letters written by Governor Bernardo Pereira de Berredo, who ruled the State of Maranhão between 1718 and 1722. It aims to compare these documents with the scholar traditions of their time.
