Abstract

This article brings into consideration the ways how society and public power in Fortaleza alongthe XIXth century dealt with the issue of the female behavior of insubordination. Enrolled by the tentaclesof the municipality posture codes and although they were not often mentioned by the warders’ speech, women played a significant role in the process of regulation and social control of the urban inhabitants thatused to walk through the streets of Fortaleza. Parallel to the intensification of the coercitive practiceslimiting the appropriation of public spaces by the population, it lays as well on this hybrid modernizationcourse a larger social project of controlling the female behavior.
